On the crisp winter morning of 27 December 27 2024, an eager group of paddlers gathered at Kirkby Lonsdale on the scenic River Lune for a canoe coaching event. Comprising four canoes and two kayaks, the group was ready for a day filled with skills coaching, camaraderie, and playful adventure on the water. The focus of the day? Mastering technical paddling skills in a dynamic yet friendly environment.

Setting the Stage: Water Levels and Initial Thoughts

The water level at the River Lune that day measured 0.57 meters—a relatively low level. As someone who hadn’t paddled the river at such a depth before, as group leader, I decided to remain at Kirkby Lonsdale and tailor the session to concentrate on technical skills. While the lower water level might have made some sections too rocky for certain techniques, it offered an excellent opportunity to refine precision paddling.

The final rapid at Kirkby Lonsdale, graded as a level 3, was a key feature of the day’s session. Despite its grade, the rapid is generally considered approachable in most conditions except during significantly high water levels. With its steady flow and manageable challenge, it provided the perfect backdrop for skill development.

Warm-Up: Moving Across the Flow

The session began with a warm-up exercise—moving across the flow above the rapid. This initial activity served as an excellent way to acclimatise to the water conditions and prepare for the more technical aspects of the day. Participants practiced ferry gliding, focusing on positioning, balance, and timing as they crossed the flow repeatedly. This essential skill not only builds confidence but also lays the groundwork for tackling rapids more effectively.

Tackling the Rapid: Precision and Control

Once warmed up, the group transitioned to paddling the rapid itself. The focus was on maintaining control while navigating the stronger flow below the rapid. Here, the coaching emphasised dynamic edge transfer—a critical technique for efficient turning and stability—as well as the strategic use of power and directional adjustments.

Each paddler, whether in tandem or solo, worked on refining their strokes and honing their ability to adapt to the river’s varying currents. By repeatedly running the rapid, participants gained valuable insight into reading water features, adjusting their approach, and improving their overall paddling finesse.

Collaborative Learning: Sharing Knowledge and Boats

A unique aspect of the canoe coaching day was the collaborative spirit among the group. Toward the end of the session, participants swapped boats, allowing everyone to experience the differences in design and how various boats respond to moving water. This hands-on exploration highlighted how factors like hull shape, rocker, and length influence maneuverability and performance in dynamic conditions.

For example, some paddlers found that shorter boats with pronounced rockers offered greater agility in tight spaces, while others appreciated the stability and tracking of longer, straighter-hulled designs. These practical insights enriched the learning experience and sparked lively discussions among the group.

Wrapping Up: Reflections and Camaraderie

After several hours of focused coaching and playful experimentation, the session came to a close. As is tradition, the group reconvened at a nearby café to enjoy tea, cake, and plenty of laughter while reflecting on the day’s achievements. The shared stories, challenges overcome, and new skills mastered created a sense of accomplishment and deepened the bond among participants.
